Cakes Made Just Right for You from Sharon’s Cakes
Personalized service, building
complementary contacts with other businesses, and adding cookies
and treats help this cake baker to expand her business.
Sharon Sykes has been baking for others’
special occasions for 31 years. In October 1999, she decided to
start Sharon’s Cakes out of her home located between Lincoln and
Ceresco.
The purpose of Sharon’s Cakes is to make unique, creative,
quality cakes for her customers. Sharon’s competitive edge is
her personalized service. She accepts the challenge of creating
something a customer has been told “can’t be done.”
In October 2001 Sharon joined the Saunders County Independent
Business Network (SCIBN). She received a Peer Loan, which was
used to construct a Wedding Fountain Backdrop. This structure is
rented for wedding receptions and has provided additional
revenue for Sharon’s Cakes.
Sharon doesn’t limit her talents to just wedding cakes. She can
design a cake for any occasion, and she has shared a sampling of
her wonderful cookies and other treats with SCIBN members.
(Another marketing avenue!)
Using the technique of networking with complementary businesses
in the wedding industry has expanded Sharon's business. She has
developed relationships with bridal gown outlet store owners,
reception hall managers, wedding coordinators, etc. and received
referrals from them. Sharon participates in two local bridal
shows annually and also sets up a booth at some craft shows to
display her products.
The most effective form of advertising for Sharon’s Cakes has
been word-of-mouth. Not only do her creations look beautiful,
but they also taste good! Word is getting out!
